Choline and Choline Citrate
(Choline Dihydrogen Citrate)
As a Methyl Donor
Citrate form as magnesium cofactor
As a Methyl Donor
Citrate form as magnesium cofactor
Benefits of Choline
Coverts to acetyl choline in the brain. Cholinergic. For brain fog.
Choline is a major methyl donor:
Donates to SAM.
Is made into TMG or Betaine Anhydrous.
Lipid metabolism in the liver.
Muscle strength.
Cell and mitochondrial structures.
Citrate form helps absorb magnesium.
As Methyl Donor
Choline helps form the methyl donor TMG/Betaine:
"Betaine is a source of up to 60% of the methyl (CH3) groups required for the methylation of homoscysteine.”
“Yet, despite its relevance, the relationship of betaine and choline to homocysteine metabolism has been only lightly investigated in humans, essentially because the choline content of foods could not be accurately measured until recently.”
From the Linus Pauling Institute, linked below.
So while folate problems are getting more attention, betaine and choline may be more important.
While betaine may be a more direct way to get this methyl donor especially if there is problem converting choline to betaine, choline has many more functions in the body, and is a metyl donor by itself.
Forms of Choline
Egg yolks and plant lecithins are two of the richest sources of choline.
Most reviews of choline products seemed to be for brain nootropics to create acetylcholine.
Choline Bitartarate: widely regarded as not as effective.
CDP or citicholine and Alpha GPC are often regarded as the superior forms, but I am not convinced. Maybe they are for the brain, but not necessarily as a methyl donor.
Choline Citrate
Most Remarkable:
Citrate form helps absorb magnesium when you can’t tolerate any form of magnesium, not even magnesium threonate. I never read about choline being used this way.
(See Dr. Russell Jaffe’s You Tube videos)
Citrate: Part of krebs cycle, ATP mitochondrial energy.
Cheaper: A pound of bulk powder is a good deal.
I’m looking to take as few things as possible with the widest range of benefits at the lowest cost.
Case Study
I tested choline citrate against all the many other forms sold and it came up as the best.
I use energetic muscle testing, kinesiology, long distance just looking at pictures.
I have used this for years as a very accurate process for me used to identify quality products.
I know most people cannot believe it.
Here is the distribution of benefits for myself I estimate with testing:
Methyl donors are important for many functions, and to keep up in balance while boosting the NAD pathway (vitamin B3 fed) that most directly contributes to mitochondrial energy. NAD metabolism has a lowering effect on methylation so it needs to stay balanced, otherwise people get symptoms like depression.
