How Big is Your Supplement Graveyard?
Is Soil Depletion really a Justification for
Relying so much on Supplements?
How many bottles are in your cupboards that you are not using and probably never will?
The supplements industry has some of the same problems as the pharmaceutical industry, both in its conception of health solutions and forcefulness of its hype.
They both share pill popping “take this” for that symptom. This is the medical model of disease, not the holistic model of health.
A common argument for supplements is that the soil is so depleted that food is not enough.
While soils may be depleted, that begs the question of whether supplements work. This is the piece of hype used to push the point without question. It’s a new dogmatism, watch how they operate.
Could it be that supplement companies are funding studies and marketing to make this point, kind of like the pharmaceutical industry that funds their own studies?
First let’s look at if supplements work, then how to get the most out of food in ways that many people are missing.
PROBLEMS WITH SUPPLEMENTS
Supplements are usually denatured compared to foods: overheated, not fresh, or overly processed in some way.
Unlike raw food with enzymes to help digestion, supplements are rarely raw with enzymes preserved.
Supplements may be synthesized from coal tar, for example, and thus lack living properties.
Supplements are often isolated minerals or vitamins without cofactor nutrients to help absorb them, other minerals, vitamins, fats, etc.
Isolates may be too much and imbalance other nutrients, as part of the cofactor imbalance.
Toxins are often added, even ones believed to be benign like magnesium stearates, or solvents used in extraction that are not listed as ingredients although traces remain.
I have heard numerous stories of people who got off all their supplements and felt better.
Practitioners who do energetic testing routinely tell people to stop taking half or more of their supplements.
One reason people see supplements as necessary is the fixation on the measureable, as if what is not measured does not exist.
You don’t see the zinc content of red meat listed, but it is one of the highest sources of zinc.
Meat is more than protein and fat.
I recently was told that, “Raisins are pure sugar.” Apparently he sees food as nothing but macronutrients while micro nutrients of vitamins and minerals are only found in supplements as he was defending the supplement boron over raisins as a rich food source of boron. .
I have gone shopping with obese friends who buy lots of supplements but don’t change their diet, thinking that more of something is going to solve their problems.
While supplement are sometimes helpful, it is important to get as many nutrients from food first as possible.
SUPER FOODS
Food gives a much wider range of nutrients than most supplements with the cofactors working together for much better utilization.
Many health seekers do not take advantage of these foods that would reduce the need for supplements.
High quality foods are a better way to compensate for soil depletion. Organic farming is better. Some animals graze on lands that have never been plowed, eroded or depleted. Seafood is not subject to soil depletion.
The most complete foods are raw milk and raw eggs, which are designed to grow a baby. Raw is more complete than cooked with the inclusion of enzymes destroyed by heat, which help digestion and help prevent allergies to these foods.
Organ meats are some of the most nutrient packed foods and can feel very energizing. Organs area more effective multi vitamin and minerals, which many more nutrients like the enzyme ceruloplasm to utilize copper. Americans hardly ever eat organs like liver, kidney, heart, and intestines. These are traditional foods still found in Chinese and Arab markets. It’s best to get organic organs, especially liver and kidney. If you think organ meats are gross, then your animal instincts are not working and you have never experienced the high from this real form of nutrition. As Frank Zappa said, “The ugliest part of your body is your mind.”
Vegetable juicing, especially organic produce is a very concentrated source of nutrients that can light up your brain’s energy like nothing else when that is what you need.
Fresh and frozen berries are great sources of vitamin C in most active forms and with many other nutrients like minerals.
Super food powders like spirulina and bee pollen are whole foods that are super dense in nutrients.
Spirulina as a raw, whole food is a great source of vitamins K and beta carotene, and much more.
Bee Pollen as a raw, whole food is full B vitamins, caratenoids, bioflavins, phytosterols, and more, with energizing qualities beyond its chemical components considered separately. It’s a good idea to have bee pollen with raw honey so you don’t react to it.
There ae good supplements that can be used wisely, especially if they are still live, whole foods, like herbs, which I use sparingly. Instead of guessing, get some form of testing of what you need. Or, only take what you can feel working immediately.
When I write about finding multiple nutritional deficiencies and addressing them with food, if I mention one supplement then the whole discussion that follows will often be on the supplement. I could tell you about the best supplements and brands you don’t know about but it would only distract from the main point and feed a shopping addiction, as if people can only grasp concrete particulars. “The one thing” they need is not concrete, it’s abstract: it’s to reflect on their own mind and how they make choices within their implicit paradigm.
MEDCIAL VS HOLISTIC PARADIGMS
It’s not just the supplements that are the problem, but the theory behind their use, which is more in the medical paradigm that sees each thing as separate and seeks to match symptoms with pills, “take this for that.” The alternative is to focus on nutritional deficiencies themselves as the root causes of many symptoms. You need a method of testing: labs or energetic testing.
It’s easier to focus on the relatively few root causes than the many symptoms.
The body can begin to heal itself when it gets all the nutrients it needs. This includes detoxification and fighting infection that depend on basic cellular function first as the basis of organs doing their jobs: immune systems, detoxification systems, ability to sleep and digest, etc.
The body is only as strong as its weakest links. A good place to start is to identify nutrient deficiencies. Each nutrient has dozens or thousands of functions in the body. That is where the leverage is. Don’t get lost in fancy technical lab tests that are sometimes just describing symptoms in way that makes it seem like you need experts. It's better to follow ancestoral wisdom, things selected for survival for thousands of years.
Boring Basics Boost Biggest Benefits: The right forms of protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, probiotics, sunlight and grounding. Nutrition is both chemistry and physics. If you can't afford supplements, get out in the sun all you can, it's free and even more important.
