Bark with a Bite:
Pine Bark flavonoid tannins as a most powerful antioxidant and broad spectrum healer
Tannins are a type of flavonoid that are a type of polyphenol, a broad class of antioxidants.
Flavonoids are secondary antioxidants that exert their primary power through recycling other antioxidants, in this case, vitamin C.
Vitamin C, in turn, is part of a primary antioxidant network with glutathione, E, CoQ10, and alpha lipoic acid, according to UC Berkeley researcher Lester K. Packard in his book, The Antioxidant Miracle.
This is what I mean by a system of cofactor nutrients.
Flavanoids have been called vitamin P by the discoverer of vitamin C, Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, who found C did not work as well in isolation.
When people say “whole food vitamin C” this refers to flavonoids in fruit, for example.
The isolated ascorbic acid is also known to work and can be taken in higher quantities, and this may have different effects than the chemical complexity of whole foods, in which the flavonoids utilize the C by recycling it.
Packard found that the most powerful antioxidant he found is his lab was by far the tannins of pine bark extract pcynogenol, from the French Maritime pine tree. The extract consists of 40 some tannins.
I do not know what he compared it to.
His lab observed that it quenched superoxide, nitric oxide, and hydroxyl radical better.
Pine bark as a whole has been used traditionally as medicine and food.
The French research began with tales of French explorers in Quebec who observed the natives using pine needle for vitamin C but it worked in synergy with pine bark that helped utilize the tiny amounts of C in the needles and none in the bark. This cured the Frenchmen of scurvy.
The Greek physician Hippocrates used inner pine bark for inflammatory conditions, ulcers, and sores, as well as coughs.
Northern arctic tribes have made bread from pine bark.
Packard summarized research by is and other labs on health benefits of pycnogenol pine bark extract, a tannin form of flavonoids.
Circulation and Heart
Reduces platlet aggregation of blood same as asprin at 1/5 the dose, thus reducing the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
Strengthens capillaries and therefore reduce various veins and edema. It’s an astringent.
Immune Function
Protects the white blood cell macrophages from free radical damage so that macrophages can produce targeted oxidation through nitric oxide to destroy pathogens and clean up debris and weak or cancerous cells.
Pcynogenol supports production of interlueken-2 and NK-cells.
Various symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome like pain and inflammation
Brain
Slows down cell death as studied in brain cells in vitro from high levels of glutamate, that can be involved in to brain diseases like autism, Alzhiemers, brain cancers, and injuries.
ADHD
Memory
Packard also found a synergy with ginkgo biloba.
Whole Pine Bark for Detoxification
While Packard discussed only the extract pycnogenol, remember that traditionally the whole bark was used. I have tried both and find North American eastern pine bark powder in bulk bags to work better and be way cheaper. This may be exactly what they used in Quebec is it is perhaps the most common pine tree in east and also highly affordable.
Pine bark powder just swallowed whole I have found to neutralize toxicity quickly, as in the case of one person who had heart pain from a trendy medical shot, which along with a variety of foods, resolved the felt symptoms overnight.
Pharmaceutical Recognition
Here is another general summary of use of tannins from what looks like a mainstream pharmacy website:
"Medicinal Properties and Uses
Tannins occur in crude drugs either as major active constituent as in oak bark, hammamelis leaves, and bearberry leaves, etc. or as a subsidiary component as in clove, cinnamon, peppermint, or garden sage. In many cases, they synergistically increase the effectiveness of active principles. Tannins are medicinally significant due to their astringent properties. They promote rapid healing and the formation of new tissues on wounds and inflamed mucosa. Tannins are used in the treatment of varicose ulcers, haemorrhoids, minor burns, frostbite, as well as inflammation of gums. Internally tannins are administered in cases of diarrhoea, intestinal catarrh, and in cases of heavy metal poisoning as an antidote.
In recent years, these compounds have demonstrated their antiviral activities for treatment of viral diseases including AIDS."

Tannins also work against infections, as a primary function of inner bark is to protect against mold and bacteria.
I think pine bark or other barks and tannins are a good option for detoxification of mercury, metals or other things. As the most powerful antioxidant studied that recycles the other antioxidants already being used to detox, like glutathione and C,
