Iodine deficiency is a root cause of many health problems and Iodine is a solution for 3 kinds of root causes:
1. Nutrition for energy in many parts of the body, not just thyroid gland.
2. Detoxification
3. Killing infections
Iodine can act as both and anti-oxidant and oxidant to perform many roles.
Iodine is most known for its part in thyroid hormone production. The thyroid gland in the neck that regulates metabolism has the highest concentration of iodine in the body under normal circumstances. Iodine can be used to treat thyroid conditions: low, high, and autoimmune, especially when the right cofactor nutrients are used: B vitamins, C, magnesium, selenium and salt, according to a protocol by Dr. David Brownstein in his book, Iodine: Why You Need It. Why You Can’t Live Without It.
Breasts have the second highest concentration of iodine, except when lactating the concentration is four times as high as that of the thyroid gland. Iodine is so important to child development that its deficiency can cause retardation and attention deficit hyperactive disorder, ADHD.
Iodine deficiency can cause breast cancer and fibrocystic diseases.
In men it can contribute to prostate cancer.
Iodine is necessary for healthy cell death, apoptosis, which does not occur with cancer.
Iodine is used by all the hormonal glands.
Ovaries are another place of concentration for iodine. Iodine helps regulate the balance between the three kinds of estrogen. A deficiency of iodine can actually contribute to estrogen dominance.
Iodine kills infections. It can be used on the skin, in dental cavities, and put under the tongue to reach sinus infections quickly. Iodine can be part of a candida control program.
Iodine also detoxifies some of our most common toxic exposures to fluoride in our water and bromine in bread products and furniture fire retardants. These chemicals bond where iodine should be when it is not deficient in the body. Iodine, bromine, fluoride and chlorine are all a class of chemicals called “halides” that bond to the same places on cells. With increased iodine intake these atoms are replaced by iodine to restore normal functioning and that means more energy. Doctors Abraham and Brownstein have measured the effects of iodine dosages on the excretion of fluoride and bromines.
By energizing the metabolism and body in many ways iodine restores greater cellular functioning including detoxification of all kinds.
Treating low thyroid with hormone medications is not as effective as using Iodine, which can help improve all types of thyroid problems: hypo, hyper, and Hashimoto’s disease. Even iodine supplementation can make symptoms worse when done improperly without cofactor nutrients, explains Dr. Brownstein.
Treating thyroid directly with hormones does not get at the root cause or have as broad an impact as iodine which is both at the root cause and has many more roles in producing energy in the body. Too much emphasis is put on the thyroid gland and hormones in general for creating energy and health. Hormones are messengers that regulate, they do not create energy. Digestive organs create energy from food. Skin receives sun to create energy.
By focusing on basic nutrients like iodine that have so many functions the body's many problems are addressed all at once at the root cause level. This approach is both simpler and more systematic. To make nutrition sensitive to individual needs energetic testing is needed to identify nutritional deficiencies.
All deficiencies should be addressed for best results since all nutrients work together as cofactors. Problems with iodine supplementation are more likely when one cannot utilize iodine due to deficiencies of cofactors necessary for cells to use iodine, like B2, B3, C, magnesium, selenium, and salt. Most of these are best consumed from food because food has more cofactor nutrients.
