Move to Detox, Energize, Relax
Avoiding Cell Suffocation with Circulation
Balance the Stress to Rest Ratio
Balance the Stress to Rest Ratio
Movement is part of distribution of waste and toxicity out to make room for nutrients to circulate in: from the blood to lymph and cerebral spinal fluid.
While blood flow is more automatic, lymph flow is facilitated more by movement that contracts muscles, and cerebral spinal fluid flows with range of movement of the spine.
The big picture is that body is like a corporation, a word rooted in a metaphor to the body:
- Production of energy in the mitochondria through nutrition and digestion.
- Distribution of nutrients in and waste out through circulation of fluids.
- Management or regulation of all processes by the brain and nervous system: when to rest or stress and move (everyday movement is normal, healthy stress.) This is where it gets really interesting and practice is ahead of theory with some of the most mind blowing bliss that is quite a surprise.
The lymph drains the majority of the body’s liquid and the interstitial fluid around the cells that is fed by the blood. All these fluids work together for total circulation with hydraulic pressure being one of the mechanisms. So if your lymph is clogged, the interstitial fluid slows and the hydrostatic pressure builds up and creates resistance to blood perfusion through the capillaries, one mechanism by which nutrients leave capillaries. This is one reason for high blood pressure to compensate for resistance downstream-- there is actually some research on lymph and blood pressure.
As health and energy levels decline so can movement leading to lymph stagnation. All organs depend on the lymph system for nutrients and detoxification, including the liver that is considered the major detox organ, and the gut where some of the biggest problems occur. Much lymph activity is around the gut, where the immune system is most active. The immune system consists of white blood cells cleaning lymph fluid at the nodes, and having the nodes direct white blood cells to local tissues as directed by our good bacteria. So it’s all interrelated and suffice it to say that the lymph can become one of the most important weak links if not the first weak link to address to begin to heal other organs, as I have observed when nothing else works at first and then other things start to work after the lymph is treated. It’s one of the big strategies like gut healing and liver flushes that people rave about.
The reasons lymph flow gets stagnant are not just lack of movement as even people who are working out get sick due to a variety of root causes: toxicity, bad diet, gut dysbiosis, undigested fats entering the lymph, I suspect polyunsaturated fats like cooking oils entering, etc. In these cases regular movement is not enough but do-it-yourself lymph massages can jump start the system, this info is widely available so you can look it up yourself.
So moving lymph is maintained with variety of movement.
Some movements are also good for the spine to get the cerebral spinal fluid moving and interacting with receiving from the blood and dumping into the lymph outside the spine and cranium. These are especially relaxing.
I’ve noticed that all movement is relaxing, especially when the spine and cranium are affected.
But why?
The pat answer is that exercise creates endorphins hormones, natural pain killers.
One reason for endorphins to get through stress and complete the flight or fight for survival without feeling pain and quitting. While this type of explanation holds to a point, it does not explain fully the range of good feelings that come from movement and releasing tension in non- combat situations, so to speak. This is an example of over-explaining things in terms of hormones, in a fragmented way out of the context of the whole system, born of the medical paradigm with solutions conceived of in terms of direct simple drug-like actions, A to B.
One theory is that with poor circulation cells begin to suffocate from lack of nutrients including oxygen, and the nervous system perceives danger as it being weakened, leading to a constant state of stress, which is known as autonomic nervous system dysregulation. This is a possible source of pain, according to neuroscientist Lorimer Moseley. I liken this to a kind of preneuropathy, which is not as obvious as having numbness or tingling. Just like chronic lymph problems do not always present as obviously as edema or lymphoma. Lymph node tenderness is a good way to assess and anyone can do that for themselves.
It’s not just movement that is relaxing, but circulation that can be achieved through massage, stretching, etc, This is another way to achieve a healthy rest to stress ratio: once the function of health stress movement is achieved through movement to increase circulation to remove waste and deliver nutrients, the rest function can activate. Balance.
This can help explain some forms of functional insomnia: sleep stops when the body does not have the nutrients to do what is supposed to be done in sleep: repair.
Nutrient deficiencies can be causes by lack of input, lack of digestion, or lack of distribution.
So your intake could be fine but have been still too long for distribution to occur. Thus, you may have to get up and move, eliminate, or eat, and then go to sleep later, sleeping in two parts.
Everyone assumes that the problem is the mechanism of sleep lacking a particular nutrient, although that is often of the case, too, it is not always the full explanation.
The profound effects of movement on immediate relaxation for me have been practice ahead of theory. I have been assembling techniques into a system of spinal alignment that I do myself to eliminate pain successfully, but never understood why there are so many benefits that I could not explain. This amount to a system for addressing autonomic nervous system dysregulation. The most relaxing thing for me has been to align my hips, even more so than direct cranial alignment, although that is wonderful, too. It’s about where the brain perceives the stress to be. The hips are maligned by chairs and the hips determine how the vertebrae stack above that, and are a factor in neck angel and head position, that affect tension as well. Proper walking form with aligned hips can help compensate for chair sitting.
I can’t give any personal advice or general instructions in social media comments.
The objective is to think more in terms of a system to interpret the complex details of individuals, not pass around general solutions.
