Cod Liver Oil, CLO
- Many people are harmed by cod liver oil
- People who feel benefits are managing some trade-offs but that can change if the balance of their body chemistry changes. Better is not always best.
- There are more effective and cheaper sources of the desired nutrients vitamins A, D, and fish oils DHA, EPA.
And before you argue that Rosita brand is different, it’s not an exception to these facts and I know something about the producer that you don’t.
Isolated fish oils go rancid because they are separated from the antioxidants in the whole food form like selenium and iodine.
The whole food version is cod livers.
Unless there is something special about cod, there are less expensive foods for the same things:
Liver
Liver is a whole food with many vitamins and minerals.
Beef and buffalo are richer in copper than chicken, for example.
Fatty Fish
Fatty fish has more than enough of the few grams of fish oils DHA and EPA that we need.
The whole ocean is not polluted beyond use.
Let’s look at 2 vitamins people seek through cod liver oil.
Vitamin D
Fish oils only have fat soluble vitamin D, which is only small portion of what we need.
We need D sulfate, which is water soluble and fat soluble: converting to fat soluble purposes when necessary.
D sulfate is made from the sun on the skin by combing sulfur and cholesterol. I have written about this before in numerous posts on D sulfate, cholesterol and sulfur.
D sulfate is only found in food form in dairy fat: milk, cheese, butter, yogurt.
Many people have dairy allergies for a dozen reasons and those can be fixed over time, although it is complicated so solutions cannot be given in social media comments.
Raw dairy is best as less allergenic with more nutrients not destroyed by heat.
Vitamin A
It’s easy to get enough vitamin A from animal sources; meat, fish, dairy, eggs. .
The bigger problem many have realized is vitamin A toxicity.
But most people don’t know the reason: Blue light toxicity.
Blue light is one slice of the sun’s rays that are concentrated in artificial lights, especially LED that can be 100% blue.
Blue like effects photoreceptors in the eyes and skin: you need more than your blue blocking glasses but electronic screen tints and dimmers—you can easily find, not going to give advice here.
Blue light dissociates vitamin A retinal from its cofactor melanopsin, a photoreceptor.
Read that again, and again, and again. I can’t go into a deep dive here.
For the deep science see Dr Jack Kruse. I don’t' have any references to give of simple summaries: the info is not very accessible, which is why hardly anyone know about this and I can’t be the one to summarize everything or find sources for people don’t so don’t ask me--but if you know of any please share.
Blue light also destroys DHA a key fat in fish.
The bigger purpose of DHA is not as a pill for inflammation.
The purpose of DHA is to convert photons of light from the sun to electrons in the body which are essential for the mitochondria of every cell in the body.
Half of nutrition is physics.
Sunlight is not just “for” vitamin D.
Most people are still “taking this for that’ in the medical paradigm of pills and suckered by marketing.
We need to study more the food nutrient values distributed across various foods.
We don’t need “the most” from a single source when it’s more about balance of cofactor nutrients working together.
We need big picture completeness without downsides of processing by separating components from whole food or a synthetic version.
Eat to energize, detoxify & immunize.
