6 Limits to Lab Tests
for Nutrient Deficiencies
One tissue sample only usually: RBC, urine, hair, etc.
One form of the nutrient measured only.
Reference ranges may not be accurate according to:
Not enough with a history of deficiency
Not enough with the greater demands for detox
RDA dietary intake standard could be off, too.
Utilization not measured: this depends on cofactor nutrients.
Normal measures of levels might not be utilized.
High levels can be a lack of utilization
Like unutilized high iron being toxic as Morley Robbins has made famous through the cofactor chain reaction of iron, copper, A, magnesium, etc.
And non food source iron fortification of foods contributes to this.
Easy to look up, not going to explain it here.
One point in time:
We need more reference points daily to know what to do when energy crashes.
Labs don’t prescribe solutions:
You still need to figure out what nutrients sources to use, a whole other process.
B1 thiamine expert Elliot Overton explains that there are no accurate tests for levels and deficiency.
He says this is more about observing the patient and clinical experience with quality solutions.
Alternative
Interpret symptoms: although interpretations are imperfect and incomplete it can still be helpful
Like reactions that suggest certain cofactor deficiencies to utilize the food you react to.
Experiment with solutions knowing what nutrients are in the food.
Look up nutrients values in foods rather than shop for nutrients in supplement labels, first. Supplements are just that, extra when necessary, not the foundation of nutritional solutions.
Whole foods with many diverse nutrients working together in most potent form help make up for diagnostic uncertainty:
Eat a food with a nutrients, but it has 3 others that you were also missing to a lesser degree but didn’t notice and will never notice because you solved the problem.
Experimentalism provides immediate feedback with how you feel on a daily basis.
This is how people learned to survive traditionally.
A folksy anecdote from The Vermont Farmer:
“People who eat wheat instead of corn can’t do all the farm work.”
I don’t remember him saying why but one reason is that corn is a good source of thiamine, B1, and is actually technically considered a more digestible fruit that can be eaten raw, which can have advantages. Maybe some do better with cooked corn, I don’t know.
Experimentalism depends on a broader understanding of science and what nutrients do and where they can be found.
This involves interpretation of complexity in individual contexts.
Science is not just measuring things quantitatively.
People obsessed with “objectivity” through measurement often lean too heavily on supplements with everything on the label so you can “know what you are doing.”
But there is a trade-off between knowing quantities and quality of the solutions in whole foods with more unknowns that can be more effective.
Individual conclusions make implicit comparisons: Compared to what?
“This made me better….” But better is not always best.
