The lymph system of the brain, the glymphatic system, does not have the benefit of being pumped or squeezed by muscle movement like with walking.
Instead, the brain is surrounded by bone.
Several factors impact glymphatic vessel flow and help detox the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, CFS,
These can be done through do it yourself methods:
I suspect whatever is behind cranial sacral motion is what substitutes for the muscle movement that support general lymph movement. I want to expand on this below since do it yourself methods can create dramatic sensation of relaxation that I think are the brain’s reward for increasing circulation.
The lymph is not just pumped by moving: walking, stretching, rebounding, but the lymph system has its own pump of smooth muscle that keeps working at night, just as the glymph works mainly during sleep. This is why a do it yourself lymph massage of lymph nodes works by removing blocks so the lymph can flow even when you are not walking or moving some other way.
Circulation of lymph is well known to also work with hydrostatic pressures from blood pressure. The third major circulation system, cerebrospinal fluid also seems to flow from some source of pressure, although it is not clear whether it moves pushed by blood, breath, or movement by its own mechanism, researcher will state that they don’t know everything about the glymph and cfs.
In my experimentation with methods some of the strongest sensations in the head occur through passive hip methods like posas release and sacral bone adjustments.
It feels like liquid being poured into the top of my head.
My whole body relaxes into parasympathetic dominance.
This can be a good way to fall asleep.
Why just tickle the vegas nerve when you can go full body bliss?
Some people interpret experiences like that as their crown chakra opening. I used to do things like that. Indian yogis teaching meditation often recommend yoga asanas or stretches to open the hips and thus root chakra to open the crown chakra. Some effects may actually be better explained in terms of mechanical circulation and the methods I use now work better and are easier that yoga asana postures. I work closer to the spine.
The idea behind cranial sacral rhythm is that the bones of the head that are all separated by cracks or sutures flex and breathe, expand and contract. This is shaped by the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid from the sacrum up. The way I visualize it is that the cerebrospinal fluid contained in a sack or dura has tension like a rubber band that can be distributed from bottom to top or top to bottom, so relaxing one area can relieve tension in another. The theory is a bit fuzzy, but methods for addressing this work well. It is not necessary to go to one of their therapists, or osteopaths, I find other DIY methods work better and you can use them every day.
You have to experience just how relaxing it is to work with these systems.
Things that make you relax do not work like drugs just manipulate a symptom.
There is a purpose to what the body does.
Increasing glymph and general circulation to the brain or anywhere in the body is rewarded. Circulation removes toxicity and metabolic waste from cells out the interstitial fluid into the lymph or glymph and into the blood, liver and out the gut.
Then nutrients can move in.
With nutrition and circulation healing can take place so the body can rest.
When the functions of sleep cannot be performed there is no point and we wake up to more or eat, even if we cannot perceive those needs.
Brain circulation problems are doubly stressful because it is like a subtle form of suffocation.
Misalignment of bones through abnormal muscle use constrains circulation.
Sitting in chairs shortens the illospsoas hip muscles leading to forward hip and head posture with a sunken chest, S curve when standing and walking, and that can limit brain flow.
What an irony that sitting at a desk doing brain work can constrain brain circulation.
In addition, the sacral bone seems to drop out of place as evidenced by how good it feels to push it back to make one’s whole body buzz.
Another cranial distortion is from bottle feeding babies in which the tongue does not learn to press up on the upper palate or maxilla to widen it and thus widen the entire cranium for bone development with healthy sutures and motion between them. Breast feeding is hard sucking which is the tongue pressing up, which trains the tongue to swallow that way and rest on the top of the mouth. You can do that right now while reading. You must be able to breathe through the nose to rest the tongue on the upper palate. Gut problems can create sinus problems that create mouth breathing. Methods to expand the palate and thus cranial bones are immediately relaxing and can be done with hip release.
I teach this one on one in a comprehensive program outlined here:
Move to Circulate, Align and Relax.
and explained in that entire section of my website.

These can be done through do it yourself methods:
- Move bones at base of brain to open lymph drainage, the brain drain.
- Move lymph system to drain down neck to the blood at the subclavical vein and then liver.
- Open cranial bones for further head circulation.
- General movement and shaking of the body that can move lymph through one-way valves.
- Release hip tension to increase circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (cfs) to the top of the head, as with the cranial sacral rhythm of the cranial sacral theory, and this may provide hydrostatic pressure to move the glymph.
