DETOX
Synthesis of
Cutler, Shade, and Kruse
I compare 3 approaches to detoxification, especially of mercury, and create my own synthesis of methods.
The Andrew Cutler Chelation protocol for mercury detoxification is strong in using alpha lipoic acid, ALA, and gets the right form to take. It is weaker in its understanding of nutrition and other detox pathways.
Christopher Shade’s Quicksilver Scientific takes a broader holistic approach to nutrition for multiple detoxification pathways, but gets the form of ALA wrong.
Dr. Jack Kruse establishes a more basic nutritional foundation as “redox before detox.” Kruse contributes a big underestimated piece of the puzzle in the physics of nutrition and circadian regulation through sunlight that boosts energy, regulates sleep and makes detoxification easier.
My approach synthesizes these perspectives and adds many other things for complete nutrition that worked in my own mercury detoxification.

Andrew Cutler Chelation
Andrew Cutler was a chemist who recovered from mercury poisoning by doing his own research. He learned about classic use of alpha lipoic acid from previously mainstream type sources.
Cuter chelation is concerned with getting mercury amalgam dental fillings removed before detoxifying aggressively so that more mercury is not pulled out and redistributed. The detox process is paced to remove mercury and metals gradually to avoid redistribution of metals to more vulnerable areas to make individuals worse.
The most basic nutrients in ACC to take in preparation are the core 4: vitamin C / ascorbates, E, Zinc and Magnesium.
Stage One detox involves mopping up the mercury outside the cells and brain, in the blood, lymph, etc, of the body. This is easiest to reach and closest to being excreted. As levels of metals decrease in intercellular spaces, the intracellular toxins can start to come out. The agents used for this are the synthetic chelators DMSA and DMPS in low amounts frequently in a gradual manner.
Stage 2 detoxification is with alpha lipoic acid, which occurs naturally only in tiny amounts in food so it has to be synthesized from food like potatoes to be used in high amounts. ALA reaches into cells and crosses the blood brain barrier to get metals everywhere. ALA is both water and fat soluable. ALA is has been used medically for many conditions as explained in the book by Burt Burkson. ALA seems like a miracle nutrient and the holy grail of detox and rejuvenation. It is also one of the last things you should try to do on your own when you don’t know what you are doing because you can detox too fast and make yourself much worse for a long time. That is why the Cutler protocol is so methodical about preparation, dosing, and managing symptoms.
There are two forms of ALA R form and R/S form. “The science” shows that R ala is better, but advanced practitioners disagree including Cutler and Burt Berkson, the first doctor to publish a book on ALA illustrating its many roles for all kinds of diseases including liver diseases like hepatitis.
In my experience R/S lipoic works better. I tried the first version of R ALA I heard of from Genova years ago but it was nothing special. No exact reason for the difference seems to be known, it is jsut clear in practice. I have nothing more to say about it, which means don't ask me to explain it when I already said that I can't.
Some people may like R ALA better because it is weaker and they cannot tolerate R/S ALA well so they avoided a detox symptom by taking a less powerful dose and infer that they "tolerate" it better.
Dr Chris Shade & Quicksilver Scientific
Dr Chris Shade is an environmental science PhD focusing on mercury detox as well as result of his own experience with mercury poisoning. He got worse using chelators like DMSA,
Dr Shade of Quicksilver thinks R ALA is better, which i think is a mistake. He also says that main role of ALA is as a recycler of glutathione, and I suspect he is right about that because it is backed up by the research of a leading antioxidant researcher, Lester K Packard, whose work I summarized in the page/post: The Antioxidant Network, and more briefly below.
His approach is to work with the body’s detox pathways with a variety of nutrients and binders. This is the difference between medical and holistic paradigms: the medical works from the outside, the holistic from the inside to build capabilities. Shade does both.
Shade wants to shift metal excretion to the liver and away from the kidneys that are often overloaded.
Kidney overload can create back pain, I have experienced this.
Shade’s Quicksilver Scientific sells many products to address detoxification in a wide scope.
Glutatione
Sulfation
Glucaradation
Bile flow
Nfr2 upregulation
Phospholipid detox of cell membranes
Methylation pathways
NAD etc.
Etc.
Detox is not just for metals but “endotoxins” that are secreted by bacteria and other pathogens. He also explains dynamic relations between sub systems: like how SIBO and other infections in the intestines can result from lack of bile flow from the liver due to toxic overload. Blocked bile flow can reverse the flow of toxins backward back into the blood to create “leaky liver,” says Shade. This implies that leaky liver can be a root cause of leaky gut.
He also explains that the role of ALA is not as a stand alone chelator but as a recycler of glutathione and up regulator of nfr2.
Shade provides a valuable map of the system to identify the weakest links that hold back the whole system, the rate limiting factors.
However, just because you can analyze a chemical pathway does not mean you should create a supplement for it.
Food be more effective and cover more bases.
Taking too many supplements is sometimes a result of trying to compensate for not mastering basic nutrition from food and a few key things like magnesium, potassium, sodium, and sunlight, which many other nutrients depend on to be assimilated.
Both Cutler and Shade lack basic, systematic nutrition as a prerequisite for detoxification because they rely heavily on supplements alone.
Dr Jack Kruse and the Physics of Nutrition
Dr Jack Kruse is not focused on detox directly, but how basic nutrition is a foundation for "redox before detox."
Sunlight is the most important nutrient not just for vitamin D but for electrons as energy in general.
Like Einstein's photoelectric affect sun photos are converted to electrons by polarizing the water of the body.
Sunbathing and exposure on the skin increases energy and makes detoxification easier.
Many people realize they can eat less when in the sun.
While sunlight is an input into energy, sun exposure to eyes regulates utilization of inputs to do the right thing at the right time: night or day according to circadian clocks. Sunny days are mood elevating. Sun in the morning begins the process of hormonal balancing for the day and process of melatonin production at night.
Sun energizes electrons at the fundamental processes of redox, leading to Kruse's phrase, "redox before detox." This is buildign the nutritional base first to energize every cell in your body first.
Redox is the combination of the words reduction and oxidation.
Reduction is antioxidant / free radical quenching or electron donating processes. .
Oxidation is taking electrons,
Healthy chemical reactions involve both as part of energy production: the exchange of electrons between molecules and elements.
Redox could be understood more narrowly in terms of how people use supplements and therapies as the balance of antioxidants “for” detoxification, and oxidizers “for” detoxification and killing infection.
Kruse and his followers who refer to themselves as mitochondriacs and biohackers usually don't focus on mercury detox or detox because they are not that sick.
SYNTHESIS for Complete, Customized Protocols
Complete customized nutritional enables one to tolerate higher doses of ALA while boosting all detoxification pathways for all toxins.
You are only as strong as your weakest paper-clip link in your chain, the rate limiting factor, the law of the minimum in agriculture, the gap in your system.
Basics
Right diet for you:
Macro nutrient ratios: protein, fat, carbs
Food groups to eat,
Nutritional deficiencies: mineral, vitamin, probiotic, protein, fat, sun.
Nutritional excesses
Intolerances: eliminate food or stop the reaction by treating deficiencies that create it
Upgrade foods, supplements
Eliminate allergies to raw dairy and eggs to use these super foods for detox through nutrition.
Antioxidant Network to Tolerate ALA
ALA works in a network of antioxidants that recycle each other in the redox process of losing electrons and gaining them back. C, E, CoQ10, and Glutathione.
I find that taking C with ALA is highly complementary as it helps recycle other members of the antioxidant network and helps control detox symptoms.
Quantify by titrating to bowel tolerance (look it up, it’s standard practice)
Ascorbates work on both toxins and infections since they charge the redox process of antioxidants the neutralize free radicals like metals, and antioxidants that can target pathogens and chemicals. Much of the immune system is designed to recycle ascorbates because the role is so fundamental.
Vitamin E is important. Food sources are best,
Glutathione is also a master free radical scavenger that may actually be doing the most work directly that gives ALA its affect. Feeding the glutathione pathway is thus something to keep in balance.
Other Detox Pathways
As listed above under Dr. Shade.
Basic minerals also facilitate detoxification.
Sun and Sauna
Far infrared saunas are a great way to detoxify and energize as the FIR is a major slice of sunlight.
The heaters can be used as space heaters or get a lamp.
The only company I really like is the Relax Sauna company because the feeling you get is uniquely relaxing and free from electronic pollution.
Toxins are NOT primarily stored in the fat and released in sweat. The sun's spectrum of light includes FIR that energizes the body to do that work much deeper than that. Saunas can release toxins in the urine as well.
