Leaky Gut and Endotoxemia
from Lipopolysaccarides, LPS.
A very wide array of symptoms are being caused by toxins leaking out of the gut when the epithelial layer of the intestines has holes or loose junctions between cells.
A kind of toxin called lipopolysaccarides are created by bacteria, both beneficial and pathogenic.
Lipopolysaccarides, LPS, have healthy roles when good bacteria use LPS to signal to other bacteria in their role of coordinating with the immune system to direct local responses.
But there are many qualitative and quantitative factors involved that impact health.
Bacteria that are destroyed through the digestion of each meal release LPS that is normally largely contained by a tight gut and passed out. But with a leaky gut more passes through into the blood and lymph. This helps explain why people get tired after a meal or other symptoms like headaches
As the body gets weaker in this cycle more pathogens can grow as mutations or from external infections that release more toxic kinds of LPS.
There is a complex cycle of activity in the gut with each meal that destroys bacteria and yeast: stomach acid, bile, pancreatic digestive enzymes. So LPS is normally released. This is why it was originally called an endotoxin as something from inside the bacteria. But LPS is also outside bacteria as part of the communication between bacteria and considered as endo (from the inside) the body more generally.
Some effects are inflammation and to activate the immune system in ways that are often considered dysfunctional.
An interesting effect is on metabolic regulation: LPS affects the vagal nerve and hypothalamus master endocrine gland in the brain. This can affect everything from sleep to insulin and blood sugar regulation and weight gain. Most interestingly, insulin regulation is driven by the hormone leptin that communicates to the hypothalamus: but when LPS damages the hypothalamus it cannot receive leptin’s communication signals: this is called leptin resistance.
The way leptin works is that fat cells release leptin and the hypothalamus counts how much is being released to determine how fat the body is. If it counts low it may signal the body to be hungry to eat more or store more carbs as fat. This is just an oversimplified background people need to know, I can’t deep dive explain everything and expect people to read.
People who can’t read say funny things like: “Can I take a leptin supplement?” That makes no sense, there is no shortage of leptin: it’s a utilization problem. I already explained that. No thinking=take a pill.
Sometimes people have to go on super low carb diets to control this problem that is really a result of leaky gut and bacterial imbalance in the body that can still present problems even though there is improvement through avoiding carbs and other foods but it limits the diet. The same goes for other forms of food sensitivities that result from leaky gut and lack of good bacteria to aid digestion, the root cause that needs to be fixed.
The blood sugar and fat gain issue is just an example of LPS toxicity, the implications are much more far reaching for all kinds of symptoms.
The relationship between leaky gut and lack of good bacteria and yeast or probiotics is that the good guys are needed to create fuel and nutrients for the intestine like short chain fatter acids, especially butyrate that are fermented from fibers and indigestible starches, known as probiotics or food for probiotics.
Butyrate is also found in butter there is a question of how much butyrate reaches the colon where it is also needed. Butyrate has many functions the body for mitochondria and metabolic regulation, so the body will uptake it through the small intestines. Indigestible fibers reach the colon for fermentation and utilization there.
Treatment options often involve some combination of these 3 that are very unique to each individual who may be highly sensitive and have to do one thing at a time in exactly the right amounts and order. Many people cannot tolerate probiotics as the first step, for others it may be the necessary first step.
